Personalised books for ages 10 and over
Ten and up is the hardest age to buy a personalised book for, and it's worth saying so plainly. Children this age are alert to being talked down to, and a book that reads young will be spotted instantly.
So the book changes. More complexity, more voice, more room for a story that doesn't resolve in a straight line — and a different reason for existing. At this age it's usually less "read me a story" and more a book that marks a birthday, a move, a milestone, or the end of primary school.
A4 hardcover $39.99 delivered, digital copy included · Digital-only $14.99. Preview the character, cover and first five text pages free before you pay.

What the book looks like at this age
- Genuine narrative complexity — layered plot, more than one thing going on
- A stronger voice and less explaining
- Themes with some weight — identity, change, courage, belonging
- A hero with real agency, making decisions with consequences
- Illustration as atmosphere rather than decoration

Who this actually works for
- A milestone — a big birthday, leaving primary school, a house move
- A child who loves a specific world — mythology, space, history — and would enjoy being written into it
- A personalized book from a grandparent, where the foreword matters as much as the story
- A younger reader in an older band who's outgrown books written for their age
And where it doesn't
If they're twelve and deep into full-length novels, an illustrated 30-page book probably isn't what they want to read — though it may still be exactly what they want to keep. Worth being clear-eyed about which one you're buying.

Questions
Isn't ten too old for a picture book?
For everyday reading, often yes. As a personalized milestone book, a grandparent's gift, or a story about them specifically, it lands differently. The text at this band is written with real complexity.
How is it different from the 6–9 band?
Longer, denser, stronger voice, and less explanation. The story is allowed to be harder.
Will they think it's babyish?
Depends on the child and the subject. Pick something they'd choose themselves and use A Pinch of Magic to make it specific — a generic adventure is what reads young, not the format.
Is this a good leaving-primary-school gift?
It's one of the better uses of this band. Add a foreword.
Can I read the story before it's made?
Yes, and at this age we'd particularly recommend it — you know better than anyone what will make them wince.
How much is it?
$39.99 for the A4 hardcover, including delivery, local VAT and the digital copy. Digital-only is $14.99. Choose your format first, preview the character, cover and first five text pages free, then pay once if you want the book.
