Is it safe to upload your child's photo to an AI storybook service?

You've found a personalized book you like. You've typed in your child's name, picked a theme, chosen an art style. Then you reach the step that asks you to upload a photo of them — and you stop.

It's a reasonable place to stop. You're about to hand a picture of your child to a company you found ten minutes ago, and it's genuinely hard to know what happens next.

This guide is our attempt at an honest answer. We make personalized books ourselves, so we have an obvious interest here — we've tried to write the guide we'd want to read rather than an advert, and we've included the questions we think you should ask us as well as everyone else.

What actually happens when you upload a photo

Most services that offer photo-based personalization follow roughly the same process:

1. You upload one or more photos. Usually a clear, front-facing shot of your child's face.
2. The photo is used to build a character reference. This is a single illustrated image of your child in the book's art style — think of it as a model sheet. It's not a filter applied to your photo; it's a new illustration guided by it.
3. The character reference guides every page. Once that reference exists, the illustrator or model draws from it so your child looks consistent across the book, rather than subtly different in every scene.
4. The original photo's job is done. In a well-designed system, the photo isn't needed after the reference is built.

That last point matters more than it sounds. The meaningful question isn't really "did they see my photo" — you gave it to them on purpose. It's what happens to it afterwards, and who else can reach it.

The five questions worth asking

Ask these of any service, including us. If a company can't answer them clearly on its own website, that itself is an answer.

1. Is the photo stored privately, or could it end up public?

The specific risk here is a service using customer photos or finished books as marketing examples. Some do this, and it's often buried in the terms you accepted at checkout.

What good looks like: photos and generated artwork stored privately, never displayed publicly or used as example content without your explicit, separate permission. Not "permission" bundled into a tickbox at checkout.

2. Is my photo used to train an AI model?

Distinct from storage, and often missed. A service can store your photo securely and still use it as training data for its models — which means aspects of your child's face contribute to images generated for strangers.

What good looks like: a plain statement that customer photos are used only to create your book, and not for model training. If the policy is silent on training, treat that as a no answer rather than a yes.

3. How long is it kept, and can I get it deleted?

Under UK GDPR you have a right to erasure. That right is meaningless if there's no way to exercise it.

What good looks like: a stated retention period, and a working route to deletion — an email address that gets answered, at minimum.

4. Who is the company, and where are they?

A surprising number of personalized book sites give no company name, no registered address, and no contact route beyond a form. If something goes wrong, you need to know who you're dealing with and which jurisdiction's law applies.

What good looks like: a named legal entity, a registered address, and a real email address, findable without hunting.

5. Can I see what they made before it's printed?

Less obviously a privacy question, but it's the one that protects you from the failure mode people actually experience: a book that turns up wrong. Wrong tone, an illustrated child who doesn't resemble yours, a story that doesn't land.

What good looks like: a genuine preview or approval step before the book is finalised — not a thumbnail of the cover.

Check whether a photo is required

Some services offer drawn avatars or name-only personalization. Star Catcher Stories requires one clear photo of the child so we can draw their character. Up to two additional references for family, pets or a favorite toy are optional.

You can see the character drawing and cover in your free preview before deciding to pay. If you prefer not to upload a photo, choose a service that explicitly supports a photo-free book.

Practical habits that reduce the risk

• Upload the fewest photos that do the job. One good clear photo usually beats five mediocre ones, and it's less to worry about.
• Crop out everything else. Your child's face is what's needed. Not your house number, not their school uniform badge, not their siblings.
• Check the image for location data. Photos from phones often carry GPS coordinates. Most upload systems strip this automatically, but you can't count on it. Screenshotting the photo and uploading the screenshot removes the metadata reliably.
• Avoid photos already public elsewhere. If a photo is on your public Instagram, it's already out; if it isn't, don't make this the first place it goes.
• Read the one paragraph that matters. Search the privacy policy for "photo", "image", or "training". It takes thirty seconds and tells you most of what you need.

How we handle it at Star Catcher Stories

Holding ourselves to the five questions above:

Stored privately? Yes. Book photos and generated artwork are stored privately and used only to create your book. We don't display them publicly or use them as example content without your permission. Every example book on our site is a fictional demo we made ourselves — no real customer's child appears anywhere on this website.

Used for training? No. The photos you upload are used to build your child's character reference and nothing else.

Deletion? Your original photos are deleted automatically once your finished digital book has been created. You don't have to ask, and you don't have to remember.

The one exception is if you choose otherwise. There's an optional tickbox in the builder — temporarily retain my original photos — which keeps them until the end of your 30-day download period, in case you want to regenerate anything. It's off unless you turn it on.

Either way, you can email info@starcatcherstories.com and we'll delete your photos and book data on request.

Who we are? Star Catcher Stories. Our terms, refund policy and privacy policy are linked in the footer of every page, and info@starcatcherstories.com reaches a person.

Preview before finalising? Yes, and this is the part we'd most want you to notice. You preview the character, cover and first five text pages free. After payment, you read and edit the full manuscript before the final story illustrations are generated.

And the honest limitations, because a page like this is worthless without them:

• We're a young company. We don't yet have years of reviews behind us, and you should weigh that.
• We can only accept up to three reference photos, so if your child's likeness depends on a very specific angle, results vary.
• Photos are genuinely optional here, but the likeness is noticeably better with one. We're not going to pretend otherwise.

The short version

Uploading a photo of your child to a personalized book service is a reasonable thing to do, with a reasonable service, having asked reasonable questions.

The questions:

1. Is it stored privately, and could it be used as marketing?
2. Is it used to train AI models?
3. How long is it kept, and can I have it deleted?
4. Who is the company, and where?
5. Can I see the book before it's finished?

If a service answers all five clearly on its own site, you're probably fine. If it dodges any of them, there are plenty of others that won't.

Star Catcher Stories makes personalized illustrated books for children. You choose the story details, review the manuscript, and approve your child's character before any final artwork is made. See how it works or browse example books.
