Personalized books for 6 to 9 year olds
By six, most children are reading some of it themselves — and starting to decide whether reading is a thing they enjoy or a thing they're made to do. That decision tends to stick, which makes this the most useful age for a book they're personally invested in finishing.
A4 hardcover $39.99 delivered, digital copy included · Digital-only $14.99. Preview the character, cover and first five text pages free before you pay.
What the book looks like at this age
- Longer sentences and a fuller plot — a real problem, a real resolution
- More going on — subplots, side characters, somewhere specific to go
- Themes with some substance — friendship, fairness, persistence, curiosity
- A hero with something to work out, not just something to find
- Family, friends and pets written in as characters rather than scenery
If reading has become a chore
There's a well-observed pattern with children who've decided they don't like reading: they'll finish a book about themselves that they wouldn't have picked up otherwise. It isn't magic, and it won't fix everything. But a book where they're the one making the decisions is a lower bar to clear than one where they aren't.
If that's why you're here, use A Pinch of Magic to tell us what they actually care about — the game, the sport, the animal, the thing they talk about constantly. That's the hook. We've also written about what the reading research actually says, including where it runs out.

Questions
Can they read it themselves?
Many at this age can, some with help. The reading level follows the age band you pick.
Isn't a picture book too young for eight?
Full-page illustrations run throughout, but the text is written for the band. If they read well above their age, ages 10+ gives more complexity.
Will it help a reluctant reader?
It gives them a reason to want to finish. Pick a subject they genuinely care about rather than one you'd prefer they cared about.
Can their friends be in it?
Family members and pets, yes. Give us the details in the character step.
Is it a good birthday present at this age?
Yes — it's the age where they understand the book was made for them specifically, which is most of the effect.
How much is it?
$39.99 for the A4 hardcover, including delivery, local VAT and the digital copy. Digital-only is $14.99. Choose your format first, preview the character, cover and first five text pages free, then pay once if you want the book.
