Ten and up is the hardest age to buy a personalized book for, and it's worth saying so plainly. Children this age are alert to being talked down to, and a book that reads young will be spotted instantly.
So the book changes. More complexity, more voice, more room for a story that doesn't resolve in a straight line — and a different reason for existing. At this age it's usually less "read me a story" and more a book that marks a birthday, a move, a milestone, or the end of primary school.

Questions
Isn't ten too old for a picture book?
For everyday reading, often yes. As a personalized milestone book, a grandparent's gift, or a story about them specifically, it lands differently. The text at this band is written with real complexity.
How is it different from the 6–9 band?
Longer, denser, stronger voice, and less explanation. The story is allowed to be harder.
Will they think it's babyish?
Depends on the child and the subject. Pick something they'd choose themselves and use A Pinch of Magic to make it specific — a generic adventure is what reads young, not the format.
Is this a good leaving-primary-school gift?
It's one of the better uses of this band. Add a foreword.
Can I read the story before it's made?
Yes, and at this age we'd particularly recommend it — you know better than anyone what will make them wince.
